Dedicated

Roberto Gregorius, Ph.D, is one admirable person. He is an associate professor of Chemistry, and has been for 6 years now, at the University of Texas - Pan American (UTPA) in Edinburg, Texas, and specializes in Polymer Chemistry. And, more importantly, he is an Ateneo alumnus.

The Blue Captain

Bienvenido Avarez Santos, or Bien, didn’t have an exact plan on how he wanted his life to turn out. He did imagine himself working in industry and building a family of his own. But for all he knew, he had a lot of studying to do before he actually got anywhere.

A Holy Chemistry

Ateneo education has always fostered holistic formation upholding not only excellence in one's chosen field but also a deep spirituality and social awareness. It is no wonder then that some alumni from the Ateneo Chemistry department pursue not only wholeness, but holiness as well. Five alumni have responded to the call of priesthood and missionary work. How did they weigh their options on what to do after college? What made them decide to pursue the priesthood? Was it a quantum leap from science to religion? These questions will be answered as the five alumni, at different stages of their vocations and affiliated with different religious denominations, share their vocation stories.

Lessons from a Chem Alumnus

"Why Chemistry? What do you think you're doing in this course?" This is the question that greeted us when we met Richard Gocuay for an interview. It was a little odd from someone who graduated from BS Chemistry himself. Maybe because he does not work in a laboratory nor do anything related to Chemistry. In fact, he never did. So why did he take Chemistry?

A Day in the Life of Manong Ric

The bell has finally rung. The chemistry laboratory seemed to have fully awakened as the clock ticked 7:30 AM, the sound of the students going hither and thither giving life to the room. Amid the entire bustle, there was a familiar face standing by the stock room, helping out students who have problems with their experiments. It must have been that contented look on his face that caught our attention. It was a look that displays a poignant story that could unfold from a conversation with the man.

Schmitt Hall Makeover

Schmitt Hall is 40 years old and it definitely looks old at the exterior. Since last year, Schmitt Hall has been undergoing several internal makeovers. This is something to look forward to for the alumni who will be "coming home" to Schmitt Hall (formerly known as the Chemistry Building) this December. Although a tour inside will give the familiar feeling of what used to be one's second home, a few interesting things will be discovered.

That President Label

When a person is in front of you, you breathe in the entire sight- gestures, eye movements, pauses taken when he gives a question some thought. And like a piece of land you plan to buy, you may survey him for wealth and misfortunes. Let him speak soulfully if you want. It becomes very close to ambitious thus to reveal someone you've only met through letters. What follows is an attempt at this.

Through Non-Tinted Glass: Aniceto del Castro

What do an air condenser, a figurine, and an alien from Mars Attacks! have in common? Aside from the obvious characteristic of being composed of glass, they are all handmade by Aniceto de Castro, one of the country's leading glassblowers. More fascinating is the fact that such objects of diverse worth and purpose may be created in a little workshop along Katipunan, but for this man, it is nothing new.

Rocking With Chemistry

Julian Christian Singson III is not your typical Ateneo Chemistry Department alumnus. Sure he can easily predict whether hydroboration of alkenes follow Markovnikov addition like any good chemist, but not everyone can live their rock star dream like him.

A strategy for developing advanced human resources in science & engineering

March and April comprise the graduation season, a time of celebration and expectation. But over the past years, it has also become a time of great anxiety as the graduates and their families ask: Are there enough jobs out there? Will the available jobs pay a decent enough salary?

NEW!Chemistry Runs in the Family

Ateneo Chemistry is like a huge, extended family. Upperclassmen are the savvy ate’s and the kuya’s, professors are the in-school parents, and non-teaching staff are the supportive aunts and uncles. It is interesting to note that for some, the Ateneo Chemistry family is beyond the metaphor. It is family.
