William J. Schmitt, S. J.
 T
he Schmitt Hall is named after the late William J. Schmitt, S. J. (Fr. Schmitt to students or Bill to his fellow Jesuits and colleagues).

Fr. Schmitt of the New York province of the Jesuits came to the Philippines in 1950 to teach at the Ateneo high school. He stayed for two years, and then returned to the U.S. to pursue his doctorate in Chemistry at Fordham University which he completed in 1951. Thereafter, he studied Theology. He returned to the Philippines in 1961 and joined the Chemistry Department. With his characteristic perseverance, he oversaw the construction of the Chemistry Building in 1967. Under his leadership, the department took shape, working towards a common vision, improving its programs, and building up its reputation for service and excellence.

Dr. Ma. Assunta Cuyegkeng, Professor of Chemistry and former student of Fr. Schmitt, remembers:

"Fr. Schmitt..demand(s) only the best of his students and colleagues: discipline, precision, integrity, punctuality, dedication, perseverance, and loads of hard work. He demanded much but he also gave more. ..He kept a strict schedule, the others would often say they could tell the time just by seeing Fr. Schmitt jog near the Administration Building.."

As a tribute to his memory, the Board of Trustees approved the renaming of the Chemistry Building to Schmitt Hall on February 14, 1998. A formal dedication ceremony was held on December 7, 1998.
